Broadband contracts ''will not necessarily go to BT''

Broadband contracts 'will not necessarily go to BT' IT contractors will be able to win some work for the government''s broadband push.

The government will this week announce a £530 million to boost high-speed internet connections across rural UK and IT contractors may be needed to help with installations.

According to the Guardian, while telecoms giant BT is offering to double the value of any contracts awarded to it by local councils, this does not mean that all broadband installation work will be going to the company.

Speaking to the newspaper, Tim Watkins, head of sales for western Europe at Chinese telecoms firm Huawei, said that more than one type of equipment will be needed to reach every part of the UK.

"If you want to deliver high-speed broadband services to rural areas with six farmers, it's never going to be achieved with just fibre," he explained, suggesting that some contracts will be open to other suppliers.

ComputerWorldUK.com recently reported that the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority has announced that it requires an IT contractor to carry out work on new software solutions for the city's fire brigade.
