Alex Hawkes, associate editor of Construction News, has highlighted the fact that it is impossible to determine whether or not the country''s economy is going to continue to grow or whether it faces a double-dip recession.
He said that are a number of positive signs such as a recent Office of National Statistics report that found the industry expanded by 6.6 per cent in the second quarter.
"The key thing would be to what extent the offices and retail markets really return to the construction sector and that, in turn, is about the strength of the UK economy as a whole," he claimed.
Mr Hawkes added that any changes in the country''s economy as a whole will likely impact on the industry.
Recent figures published by Markit and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply have revealed that activity in July reached its lowest level in approximately four months.
