HMRC reports rise in phishing emails

Reports of phishing emails have risen considerably Reports of phishing emails have risen considerably over the past year.

There has been a 300 per cent rise in the number of phishing emails claiming to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over the past year, latest figures show.

It is therefore urging people not to follow the instructions on any email that suggests they are due a tax repayment.

The scams typically work by providing a click-through link to a replica of the HMRC website, where they are asked to provide their credit or debit card details.

This enables the criminals to steal the account, potentially leading to the personal details being sold on to other organised criminal gangs.

"We only ever contact customers who are due a tax refund in writing by post. We currently don't use telephone calls, emails or external companies in these circumstances," explained Joan Wood, director of HMRC online and digital.

At present, around 100 scam websites are being shut down by HMRC every month.ADNFCR-3595-ID-800730273-ADNFCR
