IT Contracting is Alive and Well as 2012 Approaches

PAYE umbrella contractors specialising in the IT skills market have some seasonal reasons to be cheerful as 2011 draws to a close, with feedback from the country’s IT recruiters declaring the sector in rude health.

The REC’s Technology Sector Group met recently and gathered data from the 570 IT recruiters who belong to it. Their verdict confirmed trends revealed in the latest REC/KPMG report on Jobs: demand for IT contracting roles and permanent roles alike is growing strongly, with product developers and systems managers being especially sought after.

Group Chairman Jeff Brooks said after the meeting “I was pleased to hear from many of our members that they are looking forward to 2012 with confidence about the IT jobs market. The recruitment sector has always been good at adapting to external developments. Social media is the latest change to manage and has already resulted in specialised recruiters reinventing the way they build their brand and build relationships with clients and candidates.”

The good news doesn’t stop there. Monster has just released figures in its November UK Employment Index which reveal that the IT sector has bounded ahead of all the other annual growth sector ranks, including construction and engineering (both of which had a good year). Compared to this time last year, demand for IT roles has grown by an impressive 25%.

Commenting on the robust figures included in the index, the firm’s UK and Ireland spokesman, Michael Gentle, said “The seasonal rise in temporary positions across sectors such as transport has supported overall annual gain of 8% in November, counter-balancing the effect of slowed growth across other sectors.”
