Research by Reabur has found that 68 per cent of business owners were less likely to hire an individual with poor personal hygiene, with more than half taking the applicant's dress sense into account when making their decision.
Other factors that could lower a contractor's chances of getting the role include having negative body language, poor speech and grammar, bad attitude and excessive body piercing or tattoos.
Kirsty Burgess, co-managing director of the company, warned that personal traits are still highly important.
She said: "With regard to people looking for employment, being invited for an interview by a potential employer is a great opportunity and we all know that first impressions count, especially when being interviewed."
Earlier this month, Reed Press Office PR manager Adrian Linden claimed that contractors should ensure that they target their CV for the position they are applying for.
