The leak occurred along a flow line system that serves the company's Gannet Alpha platform, with in excess of 1,300 barrels of oil believed to have entered the sea.
Glen Cayley, technical director of Shell's exploration and production activities in Europe, said: "This is a significant spill in the context of annual amounts of oil spilled in the North Sea.
"We care about the environment and we regret that the spill happened."
Mr Cayley emphasised that the current rate of leaking stands at less than five barrels per day, although work is underway to stop the problem completely.
BP executive Trevor Garlick recently explained to the Sunday Telegraph that there is a lack of skills in the oil sector at the moment, especially when it comes to engineers.
