Trained teachers ''not necessarily'' ending up in schools

Trained teachers 'not necessarily' ending up in schools A report shows that not everyone who qualifies as a teacher necessarily ends up in a classroom.

Schools could find greater need for teaching contractors as a report identifies that not everyone who trains in the profession will end up in a classroom.

Carried out by Buckingham University, the study revealed that 71.5 per cent of the trainees who qualified in the summer of last year took up teaching posts by January 2011.

The majority (62 per cent) ended up teaching in state schools, while five per cent went into the independent sector and four per cent were in other education.

Report authors stated: "The present process is very wasteful, even with the school-led trainees included, since only about three out of five final-year trainees are to be found teaching in maintained schools in the January after qualifying."

Statistics showed that during the period in question, 11 per cent of trainees had failed to complete their courses on time, while 17.4 per cent were not in teaching.ADNFCR-3595-ID-800702069-ADNFCR
