Umbrella Companies May Prosper from Liverpool Growth Plans

The government appears to be on the verge of rubber-stamping some bold proposals for growth in the Liverpool area that, if implemented, would generate around £4.2 billion in growth for the regional economy, and create tens of thousands of new jobs, including many opportunities for local PAYE umbrella contractors.

Thanks to a carefully researched study compiled by Tory doyen Lord Heseltine and former Tesco supremo Sir Terry Leahy, Liverpool business leaders, the local council and the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership have agreed to work closely together to bring their proposals to fruition.

Sir Leahy and Lord Heseltine’s report was aimed at realising the government’s quest to promote enterprise culture throughout the UK. It meticulously examines the prospects for investment, growth and job creation in Liverpool. The authors consider the plan by Network Rail to develop better and faster links between the city and Yorkshire – the so-called ‘Northern Hub’ plan, worth £560 million – to be “long overdue” and argue for its immediate implementation.

The plan alone would significantly improve transport links (and therefore commerce) between the two centres, providing 700 trains a day or 44 million passengers a year. If the government proceeds to give the report an official ‘thumbs up’, 30,000 new jobs are likely to be created, including abundant openings for contractors working through umbrella companies or limited companies.

Commenting on the report, Sir Leahy said “There has been a great deal of change in Liverpool already, but Lord Heseltine and I wanted to identify how the strengths of the city and its surrounding areas could be built on to ensure success, and help those parts that need extra support.”
