Umbrella companies: Older employees ''could be bought back as consultants''

Consultancy roles should be considered for older workers, it has been suggested. Bringing back older workers as consultants is well worth considering, it has been suggested.

Companies with older employees should consider bringing them back in a consultative role, which could lead to a rising number of this demographic signing up with umbrella companies.

Charlie Thomas, executive editor of Pensions Management magazine, claimed that a growing number of people will continue to work past 60 but may find themselves moving to a more part-time basis.

She said many employers may bring back their staff in consultative and advisory positions in order to make use of their experience, which could see these individuals becoming contractors and relying on umbrella companies.

Ms Thomas added that additional pressures on companies regarding the way they treat older employees could also have an effect.

She said: "Given the government's pledge to abolish the default retirement age, it will become increasingly difficult for employers to get rid of more mature employees."

This will lead to them looking to maximise the business benefits that older workers provide, she explained.

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills recently announced that the default retirement age is due to be abolished on October 2011.ADNFCR-3595-ID-800059530-ADNFCR
