Gerwyn Davies, public policy adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), has emphasised the fact that these workers will be competing on a global platform and must ensure that they are able to stand out.
He said: "In IT, it's not just a question of being proficient in IT – other skills such as business awareness will be required to give you the edge over your competitors."
Those looking for new opportunities should concentrate their efforts on those areas where there are skills shortages, he explained.
Mr Davies explained that the key fields where opportunities may be available include finance, accountancy, IT and engineering.
A recent CIPD and KPMG study found that 45 per cent of employers have reported that they have vacancies that are hard to fill, a rise of four per cent from the winter of 2009.
