Peter Panayotou, senior consultant at consultancy The Write Stuff, said while there were always those who sought these services, they have become much more popular following the start of the economic downturn.
The comments came after research conducted by CWJobs.co.uk found 88 per cent of recruiters find mistakes in the applications they receive.
Some 74 per cent of workers were said to feel less comfortable representing themselves on paper than in person, with 23 per cent admitting to getting someone else to write their CV.
"I think people are just looking to get an angle and they're always thinking of what they can do that perhaps other candidates for the same jobs haven't done. One of the things you can do is to get professional advice on your CV," Mr Panayotou said.
